Decline in Automotive Sector is expected to Adversely Impact Demand for Powder Coatings
Powder coatings are the latest in high-end automotive exterior
coating. These coatings are highly durable and last a very long time. There are
two forms of these coatings, namely solid surface and liquid surface coating.
The former is known as the standard and the latter as high quality epoxy paint
that is sprayed on to any vehicle's finish and surface. Coatings are used to
make a surface more durable and resistant to impact and wear. There are two
types of coatings, namely, solid surface coatings and liquid surface coatings.
Solid surface coatings involve applying a layer of primer and
paint in order to make a surface as smooth as possible. The primer used for
solid surface coatings are formulated in such a way that they provide the base
layer with an adhesive which helps the paint stick on to the primer surface. In
liquid coatings, a coating of paint is made using a solvent-based solution.
This solution is mixed with a filler substance, generally known as a binder. In
this way, the mixture creates a liquid or paste like substance which fills the
spaces between the primer and paint to form a smoother surface.
Today, many auto body parts manufacturers have started producing
customized powder
coatings for their customers. Since the paints can be customized according
to the car's finish, the paint job is done with more attention to detail. The
result is often aesthetically appealing and far more durable than standard paint.
In addition to being stronger, these coatings also resist UV rays, which means
that they are resistant to fading over time and will not get etched on the
car's finish. When it comes to durability, the answer lies in the fact that the
paints are applied over a primer and are cured under UV light, unlike the
traditional liquid paint. However, decline in car sales, especially in Europe,
is expected to impact the demand for these coatings. For instance, according to
the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the new car registrations in
the U.K. decreased by 44% in March 2020 compared that in March 2019.
Since powder coatings are more expensive than standard paints, they
are often used only on cars and other vehicles which need to be protected from
extreme weather, especially those with a high gloss and/or a shiny finish such
as race cars, which need to withstand extreme temperatures, and sunlight.
Powder coatings are generally much more durable than regular paint, which
explains why many automotive companies are opting to use them over the
traditional paints. They are also long lasting and will remain unaffected by
weather and other elements. There are many other applications for powder
coatings including roofing, window tinting and bumpers, as well as automotive
detailing, as well as some factory finishes. It is a popular choice for those
who are looking to add a layer of security to their car's exterior, as they are
able to block out UV rays.
