Demand for Aloe Vera Extracts Is Expected To Reach Around US$ 5 Billion Annually By 2020, According To the International Horticulture Society
Aloe vera plant is estimated to have the largest potential in the
food industry and is the second most popular type of tropical plant worldwide.
It is widely used for medicinal purposes in both developed and developing
countries, particularly in the areas of sunflower seeds, hair care, soap
making, beauty products, sunscreens, paper pulp and even food. Aloe vera can be
harvested in Africa, Asia, South America, Australia, Europe and North America.
With the global population expected to increase more than 50%
during the next two decades, demand for aloe vera extracts is predicted to
continue to grow over time. Demand for aloe vera is expected to reach around US$
5 billion annually by 2020, according to the International Horticulture
Society. The high demand is reflected in the increasing number of companies
engaged in the production and sale of aloe vera extracts. The demand for aloe
vera plants and ingredients is set to increase by approximately 40% by 2020,
according to the International Horticulture Society.
Many of the health benefits associated with aloe
vera extracts are attributed to the fact that they contain phytochemicals,
which help in maintaining good health and strengthen immune systems, as well as
fighting infections and improving skin health. Anti-bacterial and
anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera also help to reduce inflammation and
reduce the pain felt by those suffering from arthritis, rheumatism and
fibromyalgia.
As part of their research and development program, pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. such as Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Merck, Meridia and others have been working on new aloe vera products for a number of years now. However, it has taken many years for scientists to prove their efficacy in terms of both cosmetic and health benefits. This year, for example, there are new aloe products being launched and on the market that claim to provide the same levels of health benefits but are much cheaper. Some of these include, skin care products such as gel-based cleansers, moisturizers and soaps. New aloe vera products, which are also being developed by the companies include topical lotions, scrubs and creams which use aloe vera as an ingredient, as well as creams and ointments containing a proprietary blend of aloe extracts and vitamin C.
