High Prevalence of Untreated Tooth Decay in Primary Teeth to Boost Demand for Dental Cameras in the U.S.

The idea of dental cameras is somewhat new to the dental care industry. Many dentists and dental assistants have started seeing their patients using digital video systems for dental care. A dental camera is similar to a computer in that it records images from an area and transmits the information electronically. These cameras come in two types. One is a wire camera that needs to be connected to the computer to record the images. There are different brands of wire cameras but all of them use a standard connector and adapter. Another type of dental camera is called a video interface camera. This type of camera works with all video capture devices such as DVRs.

High prevalence of untreated tooth decay is expected to boost demand for dental cameras. According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention’s Oral Health Surveillance Report, 2019, in the U.S., the prevalence of untreated tooth decay in primary teeth was 10% among children aged 2–5 years and 16% among those 6–8 years during 2011-2016. The U.S. is also witnessing increasing launch of new products. For instance, in February 2019, Enova Illumination launched a new line of loupes in the U.S. In the U.K., manufacturers of dental cameras are focused on adopting collaboration and partnership strategies to enhance their market share. In August 2018, DenMat Holdings, LLC entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with Henry Schein UK Holdings Ltd., a subsidiary of Henry Schein, Inc., in the U.K.

As evident from the above information, developed countries have witnessed significant developments in dental cameras. However, low number of dentists in emerging economies is a major challenge According to the National Health Profile (NHP) 2018, only over 2.7 lakh dentists are registered with the Dental Council of India (DCI), of which the government employs only 7,239 dentists.
