Surgical Equipment Sterilization Has Now Become More Important Than Ever Due To COVID-19

A surgical equipment is a tool or device used to perform specific actions, such as suturing, retracting, holding, grasping, dissecting, or cutting, or to perform desired actions during an operation or surgery. Over time, many types of surgical equipment have been invented. Most surgical equipment are made from stainless steel. Other metals, such as vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and titanium are also used. Moreover, surgical equipment sterilization has now become more important than ever due to an outbreak the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Thus, surgical equipment manufacturers are adopting precautionary practices to efficiently clean and sterilize the surgical equipment before they reach medical facilities.

Treatment of chronic diseases often requires surgeries as surgery is the primary treatment for patients suffering from such diseases. The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases is adversely impacting society. For instance, according to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health, six in ten adults of the United States have a chronic disease at some point in their lives. Moreover, in Italy, more than 25 million people suffered from at least one chronic disease. Moreover, surgeons around the world are adopting minimally invasive surgeries to treat many heart disorders. This is due to the fact that there is a growing trend towards minimally invasive surgeries.

Minimally invasive surgery limits the size of incisions required and therefore reduces wound healing time, associated pain, and risk of infection. For instance, in 2019, around 57.2% of hysterectomies were performed in the United Kingdom as open procedures, supporting the move to minimally invasive surgery. There are many different types of surgical equipment such as Cutting equipment (such as scalpels, knives, surgical blades, and scissors), Grasping or holding equipment (such as tissue forceps and hemostatic forceps), and Retractors, used to spread open skin, ribs and other tissue.
