What is mHealth?  Mobile health is simply an abbreviated term for medical health technology, a term utilized for the application of health services supported by portable electronic devices (mobiles).

In the United States, mHealth can be seen as the information network supporting the interoperability of health information managed care systems. For instance, in the case of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) system created for use in many hospitals, EHR software allows for patient data to be electronically stored in a secure location, accessible only by authorized personnel who need to access it for authorized medical purposes.

How do these systems work? It stores data about the diagnoses, treatments, and procedures performed on a patient during his stay in a hospital. They also store other data, such as demographics, previous medication use, and so on. The EMR system used by a hospital contains software that enables the hospital to share this information wirelessly among different establishments using a modem.

What is mHealth and what are its uses? The system provides health information from different sources that can be shared among various medical establishments. This is achieved by the use of electronic medical records (EMR) and other similar technological systems. These record-keeping systems transform real-time health information into compact bits that can be transferred to a hospital's computer or to other computers that are linked to the system. Once this information has been converted, the system enables the patient or the doctor to make use of it by accessing it directly from a terminal, or by downloading it into a personal digital assistant (PDA). In addition to being able to exchange data, the use of mHealth can also lead to more efficient use of resources at the hospital. Moreover, it also helps in the avoidance of duplicating the same tests and procedures at the hospital.
